This is the world’s ugliest dog, wins $1,500 in contest

A 10-year-old mutt named Quasi Modo, whose spinal birth defects left him a bit hunchbacked, is the winner of this year’s World’s Ugliest Dog contest.

The pit bull-Dutch shepherd mix and his owner took the $1,500 prize Friday night, besting 25 other dogs competing in the contest that applauds imperfection, organizers said.

Quasi Modo was abandoned at an animal shelter before being adopted by a veterinarian in Loxahatchee, Florida, according to his biography posted on the contest’s website.

Two Chinese crested and Chihuahua mixes named Sweepee Rambo and Frodo took the second- and third-place prizes, respectively.

Precious, who is blind in one eye, is trained to monitor smells related to low blood sugar levels and alert her owner, a disabled veteran, of the problem, her biography said.

The contest, held at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, California, is in its 27th year.

The dogs are scored by a three-judge panel in several categories, including special or unusual attributes, personality and natural ugliness.

Onion — effective home remedy to beat hair loss

© Health.India.com
One loses at least 50 to 100 strands of hair on a daily basis which is perfectly normal, as per dermatologists. However, when this exceeds, it leads to hair thinning or balding patches, known as alopecia. People in their 30s are prone to suffer from hair loss problems due to hormonal changes, stress and often an unhealthy diet.
This common and major hair problem can be dealt with natural ingredients and remedies. One such ingredient traditionally known for hair loss treatment is onion. Onion is a rich source of sulphur, which is extremely beneficial for healthy hair growth. It prevents hair breakage and accelerates regrowth of hair. This is so because sulphur increases the production of collagen which helps the hair to grow.

Benefits of onion for hair loss problems

  • Onion helps provide proper nourishment to the hair follicles and pumps in the lost nutrients.
  • Massaging some raw onions onto the scalp helps increase blood circulation, thereby strengthening the hair follicles.
  • Due to the presence of sulphur in onions, hair thinning and breakage can be reduced.
  • Onions also have anti-bacterial properties which are useful in getting rid of scalp infections and parasites.
  • Premature greying of hair is caused as the the natural antioxidant, catalase reduces. Onion helps control this problem by increasing catalase.

Onion juice
Chop an onion into fine pieces and squeeze the juice out. Apply to the scalp and leave on for about 15 minutes; then rinse with a mild shampoo.
Onion and honey paste
Honey is great for hair as it is has nourishing and moisturising properties. Honey and onion are a great combination to keep your hair healthy. Once you have squeezed out at least 1/4th cup of raw onion juice, add a tablespoon of honey to it. You can either drink the juice or choose to apply the mixture to the scalp.
If you have hair loss problems and don’t want to use onion, know about other ingredients that actually help reduce hair loss, effectively.

The psychology of flirtation: how to know when someone's interested

Rex© Rex Rex Have you ever wondered to yourself, “Was that person just flirting with me?” This may not only happen at a bar or party. It could be after a pleasant exchange at the supermarket, a few shared glances at a coffee shop, or following a more involved conversation at a social event. It is important to read these situations properly because the line between friendly and more than friends can be difficult to discern.
First off, it is important to realise that when men and women look at the same behaviour, men are more likely see behaviours as more flirtatious, seductive and promiscuous.  Whether it is wishful thinking on their part or a failure to properly identify cues, men are not setting themselves up for accuracy and are going to have a harder time knowing if a woman is actually flirting or merely being friendly.
Much of what takes place when people flirt is intentionally subtle and hard to decode. Though that may seem counter-productive for relationship formation, it is strategic.  Often the person doing the flirting is not sure whether the target of their affection will have similar levels of interests. By cloaking their intentions in ambiguous flirting, the flirter can “test the waters” without being too vulnerable.
It is no surprise then that knowing if someone is flirting with you is difficult. In fact, a recent study looked at how accurately people perceive flirting by having over 100 heterosexual strangers engage in conversation with another participant. Afterwards, researchers asked each person if they flirted during their interaction and whether they thought their partner flirted with them. Participants accurately detected flirting only 28% of the time. A follow-up study found that outside observers who were not in the actual interaction were even less accurate, suggesting that their objectivity did not help but only made things worse.

If you want to be better than 28% accuracy at detecting flirting, research has uncovered a few things to look for that may help. To determine what people do to show romantic interest in others, researchers had two opposite-sex strangers meet, and videotaped their interaction for 10 minutes. Afterwards, researchers asked each person about their romantic interest and matched it up with their behaviours during the interaction. The amount of laughter itself did not indicate romantic interest. However, males who were more interested gave off more dominance signals (e.g. taking up space/leaning forward) during laughter, while women who were more interested engaged in more body presentation (such as sitting in a way or postures that accentuate physical features).
A similar study gave participants the opportunity to flirt, videotaped it, and then asked participants to indicate whether certain behaviours were indeed flirting.  Behaviours early in the interactions, were not indicative of actual interest. This suggests that the initial glances you exchange with someone probably do not hold much meaning.  In fact, women with low and high interest gave off the same amount of solicitation signals. Real interest was only discernible if women kept giving signals over time.  Later in the conversation, women who were interested tended to tilt their head, used more hand gestures, smiled a suggestive way, and were more likely to play with their clothing.
Overall, men were more interested in females than females were in them, and were most interested when they considered females physically attractive. Men who were more interested tended to spend more time talking throughout the interaction. Importantly, female’s non-verbal signals (e.g. head-nodding) served as indicators to encourage or discourage men’s talking. Men need to pay attention to these signals because the study also found that women reacted negatively if men spoke too much.
To create a catalogue of women’s flirting behaviour, a researcher observed over 200 women in a singles bar to identify 52 flirting behaviours.  Some of the most common behaviours included smiling, glancing around the room, solitary dancing, and laughing. But as mentioned earlier, though these are common, none are clear-cut signs of actual interest.  Subtlety reigns.
Accuracy in detecting flirting would increase rapidly if the flirters of the world were simply more direct and obvious about their intentions. Incidentally, research shows that direct flirting is what most people prefer. Alas, it is clear that attempting to accurately detect flirting is a challenge. Yet, it is important to get it right. You don’t want to risk embarrassment by misreading the signals, but more importantly, you don’t want to miss out on potentially starting a great relationship if someone is interested.

Credit cards: 5 payments you must avoid

Whether or not one can afford something really desirable, one can definitely purchase it, courtesy your credit card. However, fishing out a credit card at every purchase is the quickest way to trouble as many have found out to their cost?
Here is a 5-step power guide to help you ride out the credit card storm.

1.  The Big Fat Indian Wedding

This event is hyped more than a cricket match with our beloved neighbors! The list of must-haves for the big wedding day is a public document. Everybody takes the liberty to add points on the list as all the purchases are to be made by the hosts. It is easy to give in, when there is so much pressure from people and a cocktail of emotions inside you. However, never say we did not warn you. Putting wedding expenses on the credit card is as smart an idea as going on a sugar diet before the wedding! The celebration is going to cost money which shall have zero financial returns. Take a tab of the cash in your account and plan the wedding expenses accordingly.

2. Lend me a Vacation please!

A break from work or a dream to see the world, travelling features on the to do list of a lot of people. The ideal way to plan a vacation is by looking at your bank statement. The cash lying there must help decide on the destination and other details. Travelling ambitiously by deciding to pay for the expenses on credit card can send your financal plans and goals on a trip to hell. Earn for your vacations and take a vow to never pay interest for going on one. You definitely don't want to go broke while taking a break!

3. What's your currency?

Fishing out a credit card at every purchase is the quickest way to trouble as many have found out to their cost. (PTI) © image Fishing out a credit card at every purchase is the quickest way to trouble as many have found out to their cost. (PTI) Ask that question when you are abroad and pay in their currency! While fishing out the credit card may seem like the easy option, paying for clearing the debt later may not be so easy. Many credit cards levy charges for swiping cards in foreign countries which many appear nominal at a glance. However, charges accumulated over all the small purchases are enough to put a hole in the pocket.  Definitely wise to pay in the local currency over credit card swiping.

4. Education on our cards

© Bloomberg
And by that we do not mean credit cards! Agreed that the fees for education are sky high and it is difficult to arrange for all that cash. But that hardly means swiping that credit card for paying the fees right away. Since educational expenses are planned, money can be saved simultaneously. Alternatively, one can apply for educational loans which arrange for immediate expenses and allow for some time later to find a job which facilitates installment payments. These options work out better than credit card payments for educational expenses.

5. Miscellaneous credit purchases

© Corbis
These are those expenses which you may as well pay in cash. It's only a matter of convenience or habit that the credit card is picked over a walk to the nearest ATM. Whether it is paying for a random clothing item picked at the mall, a pair of inexpensive shoes, a weekend dinner or movie tickets, make an effort to not put these bills on credit. This will discipline your spending habit and keep you out of financial trouble. Resolve to spend only for the fun bit and not on the interest part.
While credit cards are here to make our lives easier, we must consciously strive to keep it that way. Let's make credit cards work for us rather than we working to repay all the piled up debts later. Plan better, pay smarter.

The Emergency, forty years later

Forty years ago on this day India was gagged and muzzled. The night between 25 and 26 June, 1975 was one of midnight knocks and arbitrary arrests of almost the entire opposition leadership. Destruction of personal liberty on such scale had not been seen since the British left. For that reason, and because one individual was blamed for these events, the impression of the Emergency remains one of India coming close to a dictatorship.
That has not changed. Since then, India has touched safer waters and the danger of one person, or even a clique, taking over power is remote. The facts of that time are incontrovertible. The personal accounts (and suffering) of a large number of Indians who were incarcerated, the mass sterilization campaign and the extensive censorship of the press are illustrative of what happened in those years.
The havoc wreaked by Sanjay Gandhi—Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s son—is well known.
The reasons for breakdown of democracy are, however, contested hotly.
The personal ambition story of Emergency pins the blame on Indira Gandhi and her love for Sanjay Gandhi. This version of events comes close to the Great Man strain of history. This is, at best, a partial rendering: It leaves many questions unanswered. For example, how did one person come to assume near dictatorial authority? There is no evidence for a German-style seizure of power.
The Emergency, forty years later: Illustration: Jayachandran/Mint© LiveMint Illustration: Jayachandran/Mint If one examines events preceding the Emergency, going back at least five years, one finds overwhelming evidence that India found itself in an abnormal state in the years 1969-1975. One can draw an almost straight line from the nationalization of banks in 1969 to the events of 25 June, 1975. Each incident provided the cue for the next one, until India found itself in historical wreckage.
Few remember the economic problems that preceded the Emergency. India’s economic hardships went hand-in-hand with the political moves that ushered Emergency. The failure of the monsoon for two years in a row was accompanied by the quadrupling of international oil prices between October 1973 to March 1974. Tight controls on economic activity as well as rapid money supply growth made matters worse. Average consumer price inflation was above 20% for two consecutive years, as price increases were passed on to citizens. This broke the dam of public anger, making the government nervous.

A simplified version of the story begins in July 1971 when three amendments to the Constitution were moved in Parliament. The 24th, 25th and 26th amendments were pivotal in India’s move towards authoritarianism.
The 24th amendment gave overriding powers to Parliament to destroy fundamental rights by simply amending the Constitution.
The 25th amendment finally destroyed the right to property.
The 26th amendment abolished privy purses of Indian rulers—a promise that had been given to these erstwhile rulers by independent India’s first government. Logically, it was the first application of the ending of right to property.
The statement of objects and reasons behind these Bills clearly states that these amendments were essential to give shape to the socialistic directive principles of state policy. In undertaking this emasculation of the Constitution, Indira Gandhi had the overwhelming support of the Left wing of her party—Mohan Dharia, Mohan Kumaramangalam and others—and also the communist parties.
Matters did not stop there, as they often don’t in a march to dictatorship.
Soon after these changes to the Constitution were made, the distinction between socialism and personal power was lost. The Left radicals in the Congress began talking about the necessity of crafting a new Constitution. In a forgotten chapter of history, the legislative assemblies of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab passed resolutions demanding the convening of a new Constituent Assembly.
In a parallel move, a committee under Swaran Singh—a Congress veteran—began examining the changes in the Constitution demanded by the so-called Young Turks. This report, in turn, was taken over by law minister H.R. Gokhale and what he drafted became the 42nd amendment to the Constitution which ended any democratic pretensions India had left at that time.
In doing all this, leftists thought they were furthering socialism, while sycophants like Bansi Lal, the strongman from Haryana, were clear that they wanted Indira Gandhi to wield executive authority for life. It was this historical process, spanning several years that ultimately allowed Indira Gandhi to do what she pleased.
From a contemporary perspective these events are nearly impossible to replicate. Governments in the last quarter century have often found it hard to get simple Bills passed in Parliament; to imagine the momentous Constitutional changes of those years is to forcibly imagine nightmares.
If one adds the layer of a far stronger judiciary to this matrix, one can safely rule out any Emergency-like adventure.

Panama, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico are full of people who feel pretty good about life.
The 2014 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being ranking is based on a global survey of about 146,000 people. Respondents are asked about different aspects of how they feel about their lives. Gallup and Healthways combine those into five major dimensions:
  • Purpose: Feeling good about what you do and that you can achieve your goals
  • Social: Having strong relationships with others
  • Financial: Having low economic stress and high economic security
  • Community: Liking where you live
  • Physical: Having good health
The main ranking is based on the percentage of people in a country who are "thriving" in at least three of those five categories. The Americas were the most overall thriving region in the world in 2014, while China and sub-Saharan Africa did worse in the ranking:
